Greenhouse Gas Verification
GHG Verification explained
A Greenhouse Gas (GHG) inventory measures the direct and indirect emissions linked to a company’s operations. Verification ensures that this data is accurate, reliable, and aligned with recognised international standards. Verified results strengthen credibility and support meaningful climate action.

The Three Scopes of Emissions
- Scope 1: Direct emissions. Emissions from sources under company control, such as fuel combustion, industrial processes, or refrigerant leaks.
- Scope 2: Indirect emissions from energy use. Emissions from purchased electricity, heat, or steam.
- Scope 3: Other indirect emissions. Emissions from supply chains, outsourced services, business travel, and product use.
Why Verification Matters
Independent GHG verification provides:
- Confidence in reported emissions data.
- Greater trust from investors, regulators, and stakeholders.
- Identification of improvements in data collection and reporting.
- Stronger alignment with ESG reporting and carbon reduction strategies.
Standards and Best Practice
Yellow Tree conducts verifications in line with ISO 14064-3 and the GHG Protocol’s Corporate Accounting and Reporting Standard. Our engineers are trained by the GHG Management Institute to verify inventories and projects.
GHG Verification under South Africa’s Mandatory Reporting Framework
We are also in the process of becoming an approved Independent Verifier for GHG reporting under South Africa’s National Greenhouse Gas Emissions Regulations (NGERs).
GHG Reduction Targets
We also verify GHG reduction targets to confirm they are:
- Measurable and evidence-based.
- Aligned with global frameworks such as the Science-Based Targets initiative (SBTi).
- Consistent with international best practice.
Building Credibility and Improvement
A verified GHG inventory enhances public transparency while giving companies clear insights into where data and reporting can improve. Verification also supports the development of credible emission reduction pathways.
