Carbon Footprinting and Accounting

What is carbon footprinting?

A carbon footprint is an estimate of the greenhouse gases (GHGs) released by a business, both directly and indirectly, through its operations.

These gases – such as carbon dioxide, methane, and nitrous oxide – trap heat in the atmosphere and drive climate change.

The Three Scopes of Emission

  • Scope 1: Direct emissions: Emissions from sources a company owns or controls, such as fuel combustion, company vehicles, or refrigerant leaks.
  • Scope 2: Indirect emissions from energy use. Emissions from purchased electricity, heat, or steam.
  • Scope 3: Other indirect emissions. Emissions from a company’s wider value chain, such as purchased goods, waste, transport, or product use.

Why Businesses Measure Carbon Footprints

Measuring a carbon footprint allows organisations to:
· Identify areas to reduce emissions.
· Track progress towards sustainability goals.
· Meet regulatory and investor expectations.
· Strengthen ESG reporting.

Carbon Footprinting vs. Greenhouse Gas Reporting

In South Africa, GHG reporting under the National Greenhouse Gas Emissions Regulations (NGERs) covers only Scope 1 emissions and is legally required for companies exceeding the thresholds that are listed in Annexure 1 of the regulations. By contrast, carbon footprinting is voluntary and can include Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions, giving businesses a broader understanding of their impact.

Standards We Use

We base our carbon footprint assessment reports on the internationally-recognised GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1 standard , ensuring consistency and credibility. Scope 1 and 2 emissions are always included, while Scope 3 can be assessed for a fuller picture.
